I played in the Super Bowl………just ask my Mom!
In the year 2000, Super Bowl XXXIV between the St. Louis Rams and the Tennessee Titans was being held at the Georgia Dome. I was a part of the half time entertainment. Because of that gig, I can honestly add to my resume that I have performed with Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton, Phil Collins (and got to perform on his drum set no less!!) and Edward James Olmos. Olmos was the emcee. I wouldn’t really put him on my resume, I’m just name dropping. The way I got the gig was I was a member of the Cobb Symphony Orchestra. Disney was producing the half-time show and they had invited the CSO to be a part of it.
So where does this story become funny? Right here! At this point in time, my mother was a college professor at Kennesaw State University. She taught a class on Friday afternoons. On the Friday before the Super Bowl, my mother told everyone she had to cut class a little short because her son was playing in the Super Bowl this Sunday and she had to head down to the Georgia Dome for practice. This was to be our final dress rehearsal and we were able to invite some friends and family to see the show. My mother then put her head down and started to gather up her materials to get ready to go. When she picked her head up, everyone was still in their seat. All eyes were on her. My mother didn’t have a clue why until someone said………”uh…What team does he play for?” To which point my mom laughed out loud and responded “Oh no, he’s in the band! He’s part of the halftime entertainment!” and everyone had a good laugh I suppose. I wish my mom had the foresight to see that question coming. I would have loved if she said I was playing in the Super Bowl and then left the room before anyone could ask!
