In case you missed it................
Teacher of the Month:
Doug Ponier

Ok, I know.....making myself teacher of the month seems a little narcissistic. However, I do have a couple of good reasons for wanting to do this.

1) I'm kind of narcissistic. 2) I stopped teaching privatly about a decade ago and I wanted to let people that know that I am teaching drums and percussion again.
3) I'm under a dealine and instead of going out and having a teacher fill out the form, I can do this from my bed.

What is the thing you like most about teaching? The thought of making the student the best in their class. I've always emphasized reading music in my lessons so I like the fact that even after the students stop taking lessons with me (although I hope they never do!) they can read any type of music, continue learning on their own and be able to impress in their music programs.

How do you inspire your students to practice? I always say "If you practice one half hour a day, you'll be better than most." and I beleive that! Getting better at music takes just carving out a little time out of your day, everyday if you can.

Where did you study music and what was your focus? I'm a local boy done good! North Cobb High School class of '89. Degree in Music Performance with an emphasis on orchestral percussion from Valdosta State University class of '93. Played in every type of band you can imagine including playing Phil Collins drumset in the 2000 Super Bowl Half Time Show. My mom likes to tell peope I played in the Super Bowl.............and leaves it at that!!

What is your favorite type of music and/or artists? It's funny how your tastes change. When I was a kid, I was into heavy metal and 80's hair bands. I wanted everything to be heavy and distorted. In college, although I was studing classical music, I fell in love with jazz and wanted everything to be complicated. Now I just like music to be beautiful. And I love the blues. My record (kids: those are large CD's) collection is large and
ecclectic.

What do you like to do in your free time? Practice guitar and uke, woodworking, spending time with my children and thinking of how I can make Ponier Music better.

If you have a quick tip for students, what would it be? NEVER STOP PLAYING MUSIC!!! By the time most of us are 18, your sports career will be done. No one will ever ask you to stop playing music and it's something you can do and enjoy for the rest of your life.

Store Improvments
We are always working on making the stores better. Here is a before and after shot of the women's bathroom at the Kennesaw location. Hopefully you can tell which one is which! Look closely, can you see me in the mirror?
We have also installed more lighting behind the Marietta store and on the stairs out front of the Kennesaw store.
Rick Hunsucker is working on finishing our guitar hero windows at the Marietta store. We are adding Angus Young of AC/DC and Bootsy Collins from Parliment Funkadelic.

Ponier Music Presents ...........Practicing!!!

Ask any music major......."What do you do before your private lesson?" The answer will inevitably be......."Practice!!"

Ponier Music has more (Marietta and Kennesaw) has more lesson studios than we can use at any given time. We invite you to show up to every lesson one half hour early, pick a room, warm up and practice for your lesson.

You'll get better, and your teacher will appreciate your preparedness!

What are your other hobbies besides music? Basketball and Art

Guitar of the Month:
1962 Gibson Les Paul Custom
Completley original with PAF humbuckers and a very rare factory installed Bigsby Tremolo.
Don't call me an SG!!!
The one Les didn't like! The Les Paul guitar (as we know it) came out in 1952. By 1961 Gibson thought it needed a new look and so came out with the body style you see here. Les Paul (the man, for you youngsters that didn't realize how this guitar got it's name) didn't like it. He told Gibson "If that is the new Les Paul, I'd like you to take my name off it." Gibson relented and went back to making Les Pauls in the more traditional format. This body style would be renamed the SG which stands for "Solidbody Guitar". Oddly enough, that is what a Les Paul is, but I guess no one seemed to point out that irony.
If you watch Pawn Stars, you might have seen a 1961 Les Paul Custom (very similar to this one) sell for $90,000. That paticular guitar was given from Gibson to Les himself. He gave it to his wife Mary Ford. She used it and can be seen on record albums with it. At some point it got passed down. It is currently on Ebay with an asking price of $140,000.
This paticular model was only made from '61-'63 and is currently being offered as a reissue from Gibson. You can pick this guitar up from Ponier Music for $20,000.

Rock Class
Private lessons are great...............but who dosen't dream of being a rock star? Rock class is a weekly class taught by long time teacher's Joe Polo and Brett Kelly. Available to guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and vocal students. When your young rocker takes the Warehouse stage, you will be delighted and amazed. Classes are offered at the Kennesaw store on Saturdays and the Marietta stores Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. Drop a line to pmusic@bellsouth.net , let me know what day is good for you and I'll have Brett or Joe reach out to you and answer all your questions.

Music Lessons Pay Off Years Later

In the study, published in Neuropsychology, researchers divided 70 older adults, ages 60 to 83, into three groups based on their levels of musical experience:

  • Nonmusicians: those who never took music lessons or learned to play an instrument.
  • Low-activity musicians: one to nine years of musical experience and some formal training.
  • High-activity musicians: at least 10 or more years experience on a regular basis and formal training.

All of the participants were tested on various types of cognitive processing, memory, and other brain function skills that typically decline with aging.

Musicians with at least 10 years of musical experience scored significantly better on tests of nonverbal memory, naming, and executive processes such as ability to organize, plan, and manage time, compared with nonmusicians.

For example, musicians were better at naming objects and their brains were better able to adapt to new information (a skill referred to as cognitive flexibility).

Researchers say a greater number of years of musical experience and an earlier age of starting music lessons appeared to have a beneficial effect on brain function, but this link needs more study.

"Based on previous research and our study results, we believe that both the years of musical participation and the age of acquisition are critical," says Hanna-Pladdy. "There are crucial periods in brain plasticity that enhance learning, which may make it easier to learn a musical instrument before a certain age and thus may have a larger impact on brain development."

All of the musicians were amateurs who started music lessons at about about age 10. More than half played the piano, about a quarter played a woodwind instrument, such as the flute or clarinet, and smaller numbers played stringed instruments, percussion, or brass instruments.

Pawn Shop at Ponier Music Marietta

Question: Did Ponier Music open a Pawn Shop?
Answer: Yes we did.

Question: Why?
Answer: Well...................two reasons:
1) Ponier Music has always been successful with buying used gear and turning around and selling it. It's been a big part of our business. We thought "Why not buy and sell all sorts of used gear? We thought a pawn shop was a good way to get all kinds of used gear.

2) As more and more people shop online, less and less people shop locally. We thought having two businesses under one roof would help pay the rent and thus insure that Ponier Music stays for another 17 years.

Think Globally, Shop Locally!!!

Question: How does this effect me bringing my child to music lessons?

Answer: It shouldn't. The Pawn shop is in another part of the building with a separate entrance. Just like the gas station is another part of the building. Think of this building as an oddly shaped strip mall. We are not selling or dealing in guns. Pawn shops are not allowed to purchase or pawn things from children under the age of 18.

Being a small business owner, I like to patronize and recommend other small businesses. Kim and I stumbled across this place a couple of months ago and I think we've been back five times already. The food is fantastic! Family friendly, clean, waitstaff and management are all top notch! Please go eat there. I want this place to stay. Tell 'em Doug Ponier sent you. Maybe I'll get a free dessert!

Vote for Gene Clark

I am usually not one for politics but Mr. Clark is a close friend of mine and a great guy. I taught his son Gene Clark Jr. (and he still plays!! See? You can do music your whole life!!!) years ago and Mr. Clark was always very interested and involved in his progress. A true family man! He was also kind enough to help me in a few tough spots. I got over eager to buy another music store a few years back and things went sour very quickly. Mr. Clark was very helpful in getting my butt out of a losing proposition.

When you see Mr. Clark's name on the ballot, please be sure to vote for him.

Want to Upgrade?

If you have bought an instrument from Ponier Music in the last 6 months, and you want to upgrade to something nicer......bring it in, let us look up what you paid and we will give you 100% trade in credit towards a nicer, newer instrument.
Some rules apply:

#1. Instrument must be in EXACTLY the same condition as when it left. If it was new, it better still look new. If it was a new keyboard, you still need the box. Otherwise it's all negotiable.

#2. You must be willing to spend at least $100 dollars more for the upgraded instrument. Otherwise what's the point, really?
#3 Coupons cannot be combined.
#4 Offer good until April 15, 2012

Music Joke

What's that sound?

A tourist is sightseeing in a European city. She comes upon the tomb of Beethoven, and begins reading the commerative plaque, only to be distracted by a low scratching noise, as if something was rubbing against a piece of paper.
She collars a passing native and asks what the scratching sound is.
The local person replies, "Oh, that is Beethoven. He's decomposing."

Interview by Rik Hunsucker

Rik: So now you are giving away guitars? Tell me about this program.
Doug Ponier: Yes, free guitars. It’s simple:Sign up for three months of lessons, get a free guitar. Our motto is, “We don’t just want you to own a guitar. We want you to play guitar.” So far we have given away about 35 guitars.
Rik: Yeah, but the guitars are really crumby ones, right?
Doug Ponier: Actually, no. The customer may choose any guitar in the store that costs $129.95 or less. Even if you want to get a more expensive guitar, you just pay the difference. So you can get a $200 guitar for just $70 bucks.
Rik: Why give them a guitar? Why not sell the guitar and get them to sign up for lessons?
Doug Ponier: We get a lot of parents who come in to buy their child’s first guitar but don’t sign up for lessons. I hear, “We want to see how it goes first.” Or, “We want to see if he/she is really interested, and then we’ll get the lessons.” Quite honestly, that is a terrible way to look at it.
Rik: Really? That is exactly what I thought when I bought my son his guitar. Why is that such a bad idea?
Doug Ponier: Is he still playing?
Rik: No.
Doug Ponier: I think you answered your own question. Let me put it this way: I could buy a book on how to build a deck and try to build a deck. But it would be a heck of a lot easier if I got my friend Joe, who builds decks for a living, to be right there next to me for guidance.
Rik: That makes sense.
Doug Ponier: Of course it does. My progress is going to be faster, easier, with less chance of mistakes, and I’ll enjoy the process more by getting professional help.
Rik: So I should apply that same concept to making music?
Doug Ponier: Exactly! And that is why we are giving away the guitars. We know that if you get proper help right from the start instead of “seeing how it goes,” you are going to have a better chance of sticking with it. Don’t just own a guitar, Play guitar!

Save $100 off any drumset or keyboard when you sign up for 3 months of lessons.

Halloween Recital
Pictured: Doug, Miles, Charlotte and Kate Ponier

The Halloween recital was a great success with over 45 monsters, witches and goblins performing for friends and family. Congrats to Makare Craig, flute and Andrew Riney, guitar for winning best performance. Next recital is in the spring. Pick out a piece and start practicing now! Or if you really have the itch to do another one right away, Ponier Music Woodstock is doing a Holiday recital on December 11. Call 770 928 8807 for more info.

Student of the Month
Tyler Gentile

1. What instruments do you play? Um…drums, guitar, piano..I’ve played the violin and the cello before and that’s about it.
2. How long have you taken lessons? Probably, a little under a year.
3. Who are your favorite musical artists/influences? Dave Grohl, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Iron Maiden, and my friend Matt. He’s really good.
4. What are your other hobbies, besides music? I actually skateboard a little bit and I’m a really big computer nerd.
5. What is the coolest thing you’ve learned in your lessons in the past three months? I think it’s really cool that Mr. Jeremy is teaching me theory.
6. What advice would you give other aspiring students? Just don’t give up. I’ve been frustrated before where I think “Agh, I can’t do it!” but practice will get you there. Don’t give up!

Teacher of the Month:
Hanna Jones, violin

What is the thing you like most about teaching? The thing I like most about teaching is to see my students grow and become better musicians.
How do you inspire your students to practice? I encourage every student to set a goal and make their goals their inspiration; whether that be working on solo performances or reaching a higher chair seating in their orchestra.
Where did you attend college and what was your focus? I currently attend Kennesaw State University. I am working on a degree in Communications focusing in the area of Media Studies with a possible minor in film.
What is your favorite type of music? I love every genre of music, it is hard to choose a favorite. My top 3 favorite genres are classical music, classic rock, and bluegrass.
What do you like to do in your free time? Music is a huge part of my life, so in my spare time I love to play my banjo. I have been playing banjo for about four and a half years, and like to attend bluegrass jams at the Marietta Square.
If you have a quick tip for violinists, what would it be? Practice, practice, practice! And have fun with it! If you can devote 30 min. a day to your instrument it will make a huge difference! You will be amazed at how far you have come.

Letters of Inspirado....
Urban Dictionary: Inspirado -
The creative juices which allows a normal human being to create music, poems, stories, etc.

I'd like to share a recent letter we received from a parent and the teacher's response.

Dear Jimmy,
We need to change Justin's guitar lesson this week. We have a conflict with basketball practice. Also, with basketball ramping up with after school practices, we are going to need to discontinue lessons at the end of the month. At least at this point. Let me know what days are available to reschedule his lesson this week.

Thanks,
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

Brett's response:

Dear Dr. Hfuhruhurr,
Are you available to do Wednesday at 3:30? I understand about basketball beginning but I'd likes to encourage you to continue lessons so Justin doesn't instill in his mind that guitar lessons are second to sports. This mentality will reflect in his practice habits. It is completely your decision on what your child's priorities are; however I always like to offer my professional opinion. I'm sorry to be so forward on this topic but I have lost many students to sports only to see them never return.

Sincerely,

Jimmy

Joke
A community orchestra was plagued by attendance problems. Several musicians were absent at each rehearsal. As a matter of fact, every player in the orchestra had missed several rehearsals, except for one very faithful oboe player. Finally, as the dress rehearsal drew to a close, the conductor took a moment to thank the oboist for her faithful attendance. She, of course, humbly responded "It's the least I could do, since I won't be at the performance."

God Bless Frank Moates Jr.
My friend Frank Moates lost his battle with cancer this past Monday. Frank was the owner of Atlanta Vintage Guitars. Great guy, great guitar player. We did some business over the years but mostly I would go in AVG and shoot the bull with Frank for hours. There was never a time I met with Frank that he didn't ask about how my family was doing or a time when he wasn't bragging about his beloved daughter Francis. I was lucky enough to play 2 or 3 dozen gigs with Frank over the years and always loved listening to him play and sing. 55 is too young. I will miss you dearly my friend. Rest in Peace.
