After 19 years of having my own store, I have some stories to tell.
By: Doug Ponier

The Marshall Stack

Ponier Music buys used gear. There is not a day that goes by when someone doesn't bring us something they want to sell or trade. A few years back an elderly couple (I'd bet they were well into their 70's) walked in the door with something to sell. Reader: have you ever seen those little Marshall amps? I'm not talking about the practice amps. I'm talking about the tiny ones that run on a 9 volt battery and you can clip on your belt like the one here in the picture.

The couple walked up to the counter and put the little Marshall amp on the counter and asked me "How much would you give us for this?" I picked it up, looked it over and replied "Well, they sell new for $50, this one's in good shape, I can give you $15 dollars for it." The old man was incensed. "Oh no." He replied. "OHHHH NOOOO!!! You are trying to take advantage of us!" I said, "How do you figure?" His reply was "This amp.............is worth $2,000 dollars!" He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a folded up computer printout. On that printout  was an ad from an online music store offering a Marshall stack for $1,999.95. And the little picture (if you didn't quite know what you were looking at) looks a lot like the little amp he put on the counter.

I smiled and asked them to come over to the electric guitar section. Luckily, I had a real Marshall stack in stock. I brought them over to it and said "This (with my hands doing my best Price is Right showcase gestures) .......is worth $2,000 dollars." At that point you could actually watch the realization of their mistake come over their faces and that any thoughts of striking gold, wasn't going to happen today. We all had a good laugh and they admitted they found it at a yard sale for $10 so they didn't get burned or taken for a ride. They were a little disappointed but they did take the $15. So hey, They still made 50% profit!

In 3rd grade, I was taking tap-dance lessons. About six weeks before the recital I wanted to quit. My mom said "No, you're going to stay with it." Well, I did it, and it was bad too! but my parents never let their kids walk away from something because it was too hard. - Rebecca Lobo

Everybody has that point in their life where you hit a crossroads and you've had a bunch of bad days and there's different ways you can deal with it and the way I dealt with it was I just turned completely to music.”   ―
Teacher Interview - Susan O'Brian - Piano/Voice

Susan O'Brian is available for private lessons at Ponier Music Marietta.
Call 770 422 7766 for available times.

Piano and Voice Teacher - Susan O'Brien

What is the thing you like the most about teaching? I enjoy many aspects of teaching but what I like most about it is interacting with my students. There are many funny & profound things that come out of my students' mouths. I also like the longevity of teaching private piano & voice lessons. While school teachers only have students for a year or so, I have the opportunity to teach a student for many years. I have some students who started taking piano lessons in elementary school & continued lessons until they moved away to college.

How do you inspire your students to practice? For younger students I use a practice caterpillar. I draw 10 circles to make the caterpillar & each time a student practices an assigned song they feed the caterpillar by filling in a circle. If the caterpillar is full by the next lesson they can get a sticker.

Where did you study music? I graduated from Kennesaw State University with a degree in Music Education.

What do you like to do in your free time?
As a mama of a 2 year old I do not have a lot of free time! When I do have free time I enjoy going to a local tea house to have a pot of tea, read & enjoy the quiet. I also enjoy taking pictures & making scrapbooks.

If you have a quick tip for students, what would it be? Think of practice like eating. It is better to practice every day (even if it is in several 10 minute chunks) than cramming in an hour of practice right before a lesson.  Also do things that bring you musical inspiration: go to concerts, watch YouTube videos, read interviews of musicians. Lastly, perform as much as you can.

I din't have nothin' going for me.... school, home... until I found something I loved, which was music, and that changed everything. - Eminem

Teacher Interview - Brandon Reeves - Guitar

Brandon Reeves is available for private lessons at Ponier Music Marietta.
Call 770 422 7766 for available times.

Guitar Teacher - Brandon Reeves

What is the thing you like the most about teaching? The most rewarding part of teaching guitar lessons for me is seeing the progression of student from someone who doesn't know how to hold the guitar, much less tune it or make music with it, to seeing them perform a song for their friends and family at one of Ponier Music's student recitals.  Or by the same token seeing a student who doesn't seem very interested in the instrument progress to enjoying playing the guitar.

How do you inspire your students to practice? I try to teach my students the fundamentals of music by way of great music, whether it's songs that they come in wanting to learn, or new music that I introduce them to.  I try to actively encourage all of my students to listen to lots of music.  As a student myself I've always found the most inspiring thing is hearing a song that you dig and then seeing yourself learn to perform it.

Where did you study music and what was your focus? I have a bachelor of music degree with a concentration in jazz studies from Georgia State University.

What is your favorite type of music and/or artists? Favorite artists in no particular order:  Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Thelonius Monk, The Black Keys, Miles Davis, The Rolling Stones, Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, Albert Collins, Mississippi John Hurt, The Beatles, Bill Frisell, John Prine.  I'm sure I've forgotten some important ones.

What do you like to do in your free time? Even though my job is playing music, I play music in my free time as well.  Mostly learning new tunes or writing.  But I also enjoy cooking and movies and putt putt and checking out local Atlanta musicians' live shows.

If you have a quick tip for students what would it be? When you practice your scales sing along with them.  And then work on singing those same scales when you don't have your instrument around.  Regardless of whether you want to be a singer or not.

This guy: Buddy Guy

Don't miss your chance to see a living legend.

February 13th at Atlanta Symphony Hall.

George "Buddy" Guy (born July 30, 1936) is an American blues guitarist and singer. Critically acclaimed, he is a pioneer of the Chicago Blues sound and has served as an influence to some of the most notable musicians of his generation, including Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. In the 1960s Guy was a member of Muddy Waters’ band and was a house guitarist at Chess Records. He can be heard on Howlin’ Wolf’s "Killing Floor" and Koko Taylor’s "Wang Dang Doodle" as well as on his own Chess sides and the series of records he made with harmonica player Junior Wells.

Ranked 30th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", Guy is known for his showmanship on stage: playing his guitar with drumsticks or strolling into the audience while playing solos. His song "Stone Crazy" was ranked 78th in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.

When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years. - Mark Twain

How to get your kid to Practice Every Day with Very Little Effort

(Or, the Story of Doug)

Did you know? I wouldn't be a musician today if it wasn't for my mother. It's true! I was one of those kids that didn't really fit into anything. On top of that, I was one of those kids that thought everything was stupid. Tried soccer, didn't get it. Tried tennis, wasn't my thing. When 6th grade came around my mom said "You're joining the band." My uncle Ken played the drums so I thought I'd try that. We started band. Started taking private lessons and started learning the drums. You'd think the rest would be history, right? That it just clicked and was a natural fit. That I had found my niche. You'd be wrong! I didn't hate the drums, far from it, but I didn't LOVE the drums either. I could have done with or without it. It didn't matter to me BECAUSE I WAS A DUMB KID!What would I rather be doing? Riding a bike, playing with my friends, watching TV, or playing video games. I wanted to do the same things all my friends were doing. I didn't want to be in my room practicing. But my mom wouldn't let me quit. So I kept doing it. Sometimes I'd practice. Sometimes I wouldn't. It wasn't until High School that I realized "I really like this drumming stuff." I fit in. I have friends here. I'm good at this.

So why am I telling you this? Because parents come to me all the time and say "I can't get him/her to practice, so we are quitting." It's heartbreaking!!!  Mom, Dad......Don't do it!!! Don't let them take the easy road out!!! I have yet to meet the adult that is angry at their mom or dad for making them learn a musical instrument. Trust me, it doesn't happen. You know who I do meet? Adults who say "I wish I stuck with it." Maybe you are one of them? Is it your fault? No!!! You were just a dumb kid like me that would have rather played than practiced. It's human nature. Working towards a goal is work. Watching TV is not. So how come you stopped and I didn't? My mom!!! Thank you mom! I love that you could see for me what I was too young to see.

Ok Doug, I get it! But how can I get them to practice? I've always said "You make them do homework, you make them eat vegetables, make them practice. It's good for them and they will thank you when they get older. I truly believe that to be true, but I didn't realize how difficult it was to get kids to practice until I had my own. Kate (9) is now singing and playing piano. Charlotte (6) is learning the ukulele. Every day they are with me, they practice. Not because they necessarily want to, because I figured out the secret!!! It's all about wants. They want to watch TV, go swimming, ride bikes. I want them to practice. When they come to me and say "Daddy, can I............? I say, go practice for 15 minutes and then you can! Dangle a carrot. So simple, so effective. And I KNOW my kids are never going to grow up and say................."I wish I stuck with it."

Some people preach about religion. Some people preach against the government. Doug Ponier preaches about the benefits of music.

Post Script: In honor of Father's Day: I would be remiss if I did not mention the fact that my dad allowed me to make all sorts of noise on the drums even after he came home from a hard day at work. Thanks Dad. I love you!

Ponier Music will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day. May God bless our men and women in uniform and our Veterans. Be sure to take the time to reach out to the ones you know and thank them for their service and our freedom they help protect.

New Study Proves Guys With Guitars Get More Girls!!!

Researchers asked a twenty somthing year old man to approach 300 women in a shopping district. He was to introduce himself, compliment them and ask for a phone number. With each set of 100 women he was carring something or nothing.

When he carried a breifcase: He got 9 phone numbers.
When he carried nothing: He got 14 phone numbers.
When he carried a guitar case: HE GOT 31 NUMBERS!!!!

If he could get 31 numbers just carrying a guitar case, imagine how successful you'd be by learning how to play the guitar?

Did I mention Ponier Music teaches guitar lessons?

Students: I never want to hear "I didn't have time to practice" again!

The man ran out of gas and while waiting for help to arrive, he set up his drums on the side of the highway to practice. Now I wouldn't suggest you do something dangerous like this; but it just goes to show.....where there's a will, there's a way.

In case you missed it................
Teacher of the Month:
Doug Ponier

Ok, I know.....making myself teacher of the month seems a little narcissistic. However, I do have a couple of good reasons for wanting to do this.

1) I'm kind of narcissistic. 2) I stopped teaching privatly about a decade ago and I wanted to let people that know that I am teaching drums and percussion again.
3) I'm under a dealine and instead of going out and having a teacher fill out the form, I can do this from my bed.

What is the thing you like most about teaching? The thought of making the student the best in their class. I've always emphasized reading music in my lessons so I like the fact that even after the students stop taking lessons with me (although I hope they never do!) they can read any type of music, continue learning on their own and be able to impress in their music programs.

How do you inspire your students to practice? I always say "If you practice one half hour a day, you'll be better than most." and I beleive that! Getting better at music takes just carving out a little time out of your day, everyday if you can.

Where did you study music and what was your focus? I'm a local boy done good! North Cobb High School class of '89. Degree in Music Performance with an emphasis on orchestral percussion from Valdosta State University class of '93. Played in every type of band you can imagine including playing Phil Collins drumset in the 2000 Super Bowl Half Time Show. My mom likes to tell peope I played in the Super Bowl.............and leaves it at that!!

What is your favorite type of music and/or artists? It's funny how your tastes change. When I was a kid, I was into heavy metal and 80's hair bands. I wanted everything to be heavy and distorted. In college, although I was studing classical music, I fell in love with jazz and wanted everything to be complicated. Now I just like music to be beautiful. And I love the blues. My record (kids: those are large CD's) collection is large and
ecclectic.

What do you like to do in your free time? Practice guitar and uke, woodworking, spending time with my children and thinking of how I can make Ponier Music better.

If you have a quick tip for students, what would it be? NEVER STOP PLAYING MUSIC!!! By the time most of us are 18, your sports career will be done. No one will ever ask you to stop playing music and it's something you can do and enjoy for the rest of your life.

We have also installed more lighting behind the Marietta store and on the stairs out front of the Kennesaw store.
Rick Hunsucker is working on finishing our guitar hero windows at the Marietta store. We are adding Angus Young of AC/DC and Bootsy Collins from Parliment Funkadelic.

Ponier Music Presents ...........Practicing!!!

Ponier Music has more (Marietta and Kennesaw) has more lesson studios than we can use at any given time. We invite you to show up to every lesson one half hour early, pick a room, warm up and practice for your lesson.

Guitar of the Month:
1962 Gibson Les Paul Custom
Completley original with PAF humbuckers and a very rare factory installed Bigsby Tremolo.
Don't call me an SG!!!
The one Les didn't like! The Les Paul guitar (as we know it) came out in 1952. By 1961 Gibson thought it needed a new look and so came out with the body style you see here. Les Paul (the man, for you youngsters that didn't realize how this guitar got it's name) didn't like it. He told Gibson "If that is the new Les Paul, I'd like you to take my name off it." Gibson relented and went back to making Les Pauls in the more traditional format. This body style would be renamed the SG which stands for "Solidbody Guitar". Oddly enough, that is what a Les Paul is, but I guess no one seemed to point out that irony.
If you watch Pawn Stars, you might have seen a 1961 Les Paul Custom (very similar to this one) sell for $90,000. That paticular guitar was given from Gibson to Les himself. He gave it to his wife Mary Ford. She used it and can be seen on record albums with it. At some point it got passed down. It is currently on Ebay with an asking price of $140,000.
This paticular model was only made from '61-'63 and is currently being offered as a reissue from Gibson. You can pick this guitar up from Ponier Music for $20,000.

Private lessons are great...............but who dosen't dream of being a rock star? Rock class is a weekly class taught by long time teacher's Joe Polo and Brett Kelly. Music Lessons Pay Off Years Later

In the study, published in Neuropsychology, researchers divided 70 older adults, ages 60 to 83, into three groups based on their levels of musical experience:

  • Nonmusicians: those who never took music lessons or learned to play an instrument.
  • Low-activity musicians: one to nine years of musical experience and some formal training.
  • High-activity musicians: at least 10 or more years experience on a regular basis and formal training.

All of the participants were tested on various types of cognitive processing, memory, and other brain function skills that typically decline with aging.

Musicians with at least 10 years of musical experience scored significantly better on tests of nonverbal memory, naming, and executive processes such as ability to organize, plan, and manage time, compared with nonmusicians.

For example, musicians were better at naming objects and their brains were better able to adapt to new information (a skill referred to as cognitive flexibility).

Researchers say a greater number of years of musical experience and an earlier age of starting music lessons appeared to have a beneficial effect on brain function, but this link needs more study.

"Based on previous research and our study results, we believe that both the years of musical participation and the age of acquisition are critical," says Hanna-Pladdy. "There are crucial periods in brain plasticity that enhance learning, which may make it easier to learn a musical instrument before a certain age and thus may have a larger impact on brain development."

All of the musicians were amateurs who started music lessons at about about age 10. More than half played the piano, about a quarter played a woodwind instrument, such as the flute or clarinet, and smaller numbers played stringed instruments, percussion, or brass instruments.

Pawn Shop at Ponier Music Marietta

Question: Did Ponier Music open a Pawn Shop?
Answer: Yes we did.

Question: Why?
Answer: Well...................two reasons:
1) Ponier Music has always been successful with buying used gear and turning around and selling it. It's been a big part of our business. We thought "Why not buy and sell all sorts of used gear? We thought a pawn shop was a good way to get all kinds of used gear.

2) As more and more people shop online, less and less people shop locally. We thought having two businesses under one roof would help pay the rent and thus insure that Ponier Music stays for another 17 years.

Think Globally, Shop Locally!!!

Question: How does this effect me bringing my child to music lessons?

Answer: It shouldn't. The Pawn shop is in another part of the building with a separate entrance. Just like the gas station is another part of the building. Think of this building as an oddly shaped strip mall. We are not selling or dealing in guns. Pawn shops are not allowed to purchase or pawn things from children under the age of 18.

Being a small business owner, I like to patronize and recommend other small businesses. Kim and I stumbled across this place a couple of months ago and I think we've been back five times already. The food is fantastic! Family friendly, clean, waitstaff and management are all top notch! Please go eat there. I want this place to stay. Tell 'em Doug Ponier sent you. Maybe I'll get a free dessert!

Vote for Gene Clark

I am usually not one for politics but Mr. Clark is a close friend of mine and a great guy. I taught his son Gene Clark Jr. (and he still plays!! See? You can do music your whole life!!!) years ago and Mr. Clark was always very interested and involved in his progress. A true family man! He was also kind enough to help me in a few tough spots. I got over eager to buy another music store a few years back and things went sour very quickly. Mr. Clark was very helpful in getting my butt out of a losing proposition.

When you see Mr. Clark's name on the ballot, please be sure to vote for him.

Want to Upgrade?

If you have bought an instrument from Ponier Music in the last 6 months, and you want to upgrade to something nicer......bring it in, let us look up what you paid and we will give you 100% trade in credit towards a nicer, newer instrument.
Some rules apply:

#1. Instrument must be in EXACTLY the same condition as when it left. If it was new, it better still look new. If it was a new keyboard, you still need the box. Otherwise it's all negotiable.

#2. You must be willing to spend at least $100 dollars more for the upgraded instrument. Otherwise what's the point, really?
#3 Coupons cannot be combined.
#4 Offer good until April 15, 2012

Music Joke

What's that sound?

A tourist is sightseeing in a European city. She comes upon the tomb of Beethoven, and begins reading the commerative plaque, only to be distracted by a low scratching noise, as if something was rubbing against a piece of paper.
She collars a passing native and asks what the scratching sound is.
The local person replies, "Oh, that is Beethoven. He's decomposing."

Interview by Rik Hunsucker

Rik: So now you are giving away guitars? Tell me about this program.
Doug Ponier: Yes, free guitars. Its simple:Sign up for three months of lessons, get a free guitar. Our motto is, We dont just want you to own a guitar. We want you to play guitar. So far we have given away about 35 guitars.
Rik: Yeah, but the guitars are really crumby ones, right?
Doug Ponier: Actually, no. The customer may choose any guitar in the store that costs $129.95 or less. Even if you want to get a more expensive guitar, you just pay the difference. So you can get a $200 guitar for just $70 bucks.
Rik: Why give them a guitar? Why not sell the guitar and get them to sign up for lessons?
Doug Ponier: We get a lot of parents who come in to buy their childs first guitar but dont sign up for lessons. I hear, We want to see how it goes first. Or, We want to see if he/she is really interested, and then well get the lessons. Quite honestly, that is a terrible way to look at it.
Rik: Really? That is exactly what I thought when I bought my son his guitar. Why is that such a bad idea?
Doug Ponier: Is he still playing?
Rik: No.
Doug Ponier: I think you answered your own question. Let me put it this way: I could buy a book on how to build a deck and try to build a deck. But it would be a heck of a lot easier if I got my friend Joe, who builds decks for a living, to be right there next to me for guidance.
Rik: That makes sense.
Doug Ponier: Of course it does. My progress is going to be faster, easier, with less chance of mistakes, and Ill enjoy the process more by getting professional help.
Rik: So I should apply that same concept to making music?
Doug Ponier: Exactly! And that is why we are giving away the guitars. We know that if you get proper help right from the start instead of seeing how it goes, you are going to have a better chance of sticking with it. Dont just own a guitar, Play guitar!

Save $100 off any drumset or keyboard when you sign up for 3 months of lessons.

Black Friday One Day Sale

We're bored!!! And just to make it worth your while.....Ponier Music is having the biggest sale of the yeaer. I can't even tell you how big because I'll get in trouble with my distributors. Student of the Month
Tyler Gentile

1. What instruments do you play? Umdrums, guitar, piano..Ive played the violin and the cello before and thats about it.
2. How long have you taken lessons? Probably, a little under a year.
3. Who are your favorite musical artists/influences? Dave Grohl, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Iron Maiden, and my friend Matt. Hes really good.
4. What are your other hobbies, besides music? I actually skateboard a little bit and Im a really big computer nerd.
5. What is the coolest thing youve learned in your lessons in the past three months? I think its really cool that Mr. Jeremy is teaching me theory.
6. What advice would you give other aspiring students? Just dont give up. Ive been frustrated before where I think Agh, I cant do it! but practice will get you there. Dont give up!

Teacher of the Month:
Hanna Jones, violin

What is the thing you like most about teaching? The thing I like most about teaching is to see my students grow and become better musicians.
How do you inspire your students to practice? I encourage every student to set a goal and make their goals their inspiration; whether that be working on solo performances or reaching a higher chair seating in their orchestra.
Where did you attend college and what was your focus? I currently attend Kennesaw State University. I am working on a degree in Communications focusing in the area of Media Studies with a possible minor in film.
What is your favorite type of music? I love every genre of music, it is hard to choose a favorite. My top 3 favorite genres are classical music, classic rock, and bluegrass.
What do you like to do in your free time? Music is a huge part of my life, so in my spare time I love to play my banjo. I have been playing banjo for about four and a half years, and like to attend bluegrass jams at the Marietta Square.
If you have a quick tip for violinists, what would it be? Practice, practice, practice! And have fun with it! If you can devote 30 min. a day to your instrument it will make a huge difference! You will be amazed at how far you have come.

Letters of Inspirado....
Urban Dictionary: Inspirado -
The creative juices which allows a normal human being to create music, poems, stories, etc.

I'd like to share a recent letter we received from a parent and the teacher's response.

Dear Jimmy,
We need to change Justin's guitar lesson this week. We have a conflict with basketball practice. Also, with basketball ramping up with after school practices, we are going to need to discontinue lessons at the end of the month. At least at this point. Let me know what days are available to reschedule his lesson this week.

Thanks,
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

Brett's response:

Dear Dr. Hfuhruhurr,
Are you available to do Wednesday at 3:30? I understand about basketball beginning but I'd likes to encourage you to continue lessons so Justin doesn't instill in his mind that guitar lessons are second to sports. This mentality will reflect in his practice habits. It is completely your decision on what your child's priorities are; however I always like to offer my professional opinion. I'm sorry to be so forward on this topic but I have lost many students to sports only to see them never return.

Sincerely,

Jimmy

Joke
A community orchestra was plagued by attendance problems. Several musicians were absent at each rehearsal. As a matter of fact, every player in the orchestra had missed several rehearsals, except for one very faithful oboe player. Finally, as the dress rehearsal drew to a close, the conductor took a moment to thank the oboist for her faithful attendance. She, of course, humbly responded "It's the least I could do, since I won't be at the performance."

Johnathan Mover Drum Clinic
Cancelled until a later date!!!
(Drummer for Joe Satrani)
Wednesday, Rocktober 28th
The Warehouse, Ponier Music Kennesaw
$8 in advance, $12 day of show
I am so excited about this one! As a teenager I saw Johnathan Mover in clinic at Atlanta Pro Percussion and I can tell you he will not disappoint!!! Johnathan plays double bass licks with one bass and no double pedal. It is unreal. With over 125 album credits to his name, Johnathan has performed and/or recorded with the likes of Alice Cooper, Joe Satriani, Aretha Franklin, Mick Jagger, Peter Frampton, Frank Gambale and Joe Lynn Turner just to name a few. Check out this clip of Johnathan Mover in action and don't miss this clinic!!!

God Bless Frank Moates Jr.
My friend Frank Moates lost his battle with cancer this past Monday. Frank was the owner of Atlanta Vintage Guitars. Great guy, great guitar player. We did some business over the years but mostly I would go in AVG and shoot the bull with Frank for hours. There was never a time I met with Frank that he didn't ask about how my family was doing or a time when he wasn't bragging about his beloved daughter Francis. I was lucky enough to play 2 or 3 dozen gigs with Frank over the years and always loved listening to him play and sing. 55 is too young. I will miss you dearly my friend. Rest in Peace.
